| 2008 | Vicky Cristina Barcelona |
Beautiful, relaxing, entertaining and oh-so-Woody. |
| 1997 | Lost Highway |
A beautiful Lynch film with some very typical Lynchian features, and what seems to be almost a coherent plot. |
| 2012 | Killing Them Softly |
An interesting and crafted movie with what seems to be a few take-away messages, but not really anything groundbreaking. |
| 2014 | The Imitation Game |
A bit of a predictable, melodramatic drag. |
| 2014 | It Follows |
Horror movies that actually creep you out are an extreme rarity. Horror movies that actually scare you are rarer still. This movie sits somewhere between these: fantastic! |
| 2009 | In The Loop |
An absolutely hilarious film with Peter Capaldi (now in Doctor Who) that seems to blend Dr. Strangelove and The Office, set before the Iraqi War in the UK, the US and the UN. |
| 2014 | Into the Woods |
A fun musical adaptation, with an excellent performance from Meryl Streep. Some of the other actors/singers; less so. |
| 1976 | The Man Who Fell to Earth |
A beautiful, slow and 'artsy' film that tries a little bit too hard to create layers of meaning, and doesn't seem to always succeed. |
| 2007 | Lars and the Real Girl |
The movie features both a hilarious concept that doesn't seem to tire, and a nice heart-warming story in one of the least soppy of ways. I loved it! |
| 2015 | The Intern |
A movie as shallow and absurd as it is frustratingly predictable. |
| 1995 | The Usual Suspects |
An unexpected plot direction gives grippingly unexpected results - great! |
| 2015 | Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation |
Cruise has noticeably aged in this film which feels remarkably similar to the previous one. It's almost like he's perfected the formula - it's hard to overly complain about or praise this film. |
| 2011 | Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol |
The Mission: Impossible series slowly sheds away substance in favour of even more action; as ridiculous as possible, plus some added comic relief from Simon Pegg. Balanced, but unremarkable. |
| 2006 | Mission: Impossible III |
Solid heart-pumping action with a great cast and never ending dramatic developments. |
| 2000 | Mission: Impossible II |
John Woo adds his unique melodrama, action and explosions to a film that just loves having the Sydney Harbour Bridge & Opera House in any shot possible. Okay, but a bit of a let down after MI:1. |
| 1996 | Mission: Impossible |
Classic 90s high-tech gadgets, an interesting plot, and killer scenes, moments and characters that defined the future of the Mission: Impossible series. |
| 2004 | Layer Cake |
A frightfully clever, well-spun tale featuring Daniel Craig and Miles O'Brian from Star Trek. |
| 1999 | Wild Wild West |
An absolutely top-notch mess, with magnificent giant robotic spiders and some form of plot, probably. |
| 2015 | The Little Prince |
A solid effort at using and going beyond the book. An overall charming and nice film, but nothing exceptional. |
| 2015 | Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials |
After somehow getting a sequel, the Maze Runner series predictably manages to get worse. Good luck finishing this one. |
| 2014 | The Maze Runner |
A tiresome YA film that brings nothing new to the table. |
| 2014 | A Most Violent Year |
You feel as if you're behind the lead character's shoes as things go from bad to worse to terrible. Absolutely fascinating and gripping. |
| 2005 | A History of Violence |
Cronenberg proves his range as a director with an excellent, tightly paced psychological thriller. |
| 2007 | Eastern Promises |
An intense storyline with excellent performances from Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts. Cronenberg twists the knife, and isn't afraid to deliver grotesque and realistic fight scenes. |
| 1999 | eXistenZ |
Cronenberg's Videodrome comes to mind - this is a weird, oozy, memorising experience. |
| 2014 | The Signal |
A solid first half fizzles into a poorly executed, unusual storyline with an irrelevant twist. |
| 2015 | Star Wars |
Abrams delivers us a satisfying cornucopia of nostalgia and action (as he did with Star Trek), but falls behind in actually creating anything original and new. The plot is shallow and remarkably similar to a certain 1977 film. |
| 2015 | The Lobster |
Part genius, part needlessly and confusingly absurd. Certainly one of the most unique films you'll have the opportunity to watch. |
| 2015 | Bridge of Spies |
Cold War espionage gets a breath of new life thanks to a consistently delightful performance from Tom Hanks and a plot that keeps on shifting and shifting. |
| 2015 | The Martian |
A pulse pounding space thriller settles into a fascinating and well thought out experience. |
| 2014 | Whiplash |
Think Black Swan, yet totally different. The tension in this movie shakes the screen and casts blood over the camera, as you squirm repeatedly gobsmacked in your seat. |
| 1991 | Cape Fear |
5 Martin Scorseses out of Martin Scorsese. Robert De Niro proves to the world why he's an amazing actor, as Scorsese barrages you with strings. (There was a Simpsons episode inspired by this!) |
| 2001 | Hannibal |
A bit disappointing after the thrills within The Silence of the Lambs. This movie is more let's-watch-Hannibal-kill, loosing the fearful mystery and brilliance he held in the previous movie. |
| 1991 | The Silence of the Lambs |
Anthony Hopkins turns Hannibal into perhaps one of the greatest villains in cinema. |
| 2008 | Ponyo |
Fun and innocent, with a bit of action blended in. Charming! |
| 1988 | My Neighbor Totoro |
As heartwarming and nostalgic as ever; a film to rival and surpass many Disney greats. There's no cliched conflict here - this movie defies and delights. |
| 1990 | The Grifters |
Good luck predicting this one. Things just keep on happening, with no apparent connection or conclusion. Neo-noir, alright. |
| 2014 | The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 |
Now that the stage has been set and all the cards have been played in the first two movies, this film has nothing left to do. Entirely predictable from start to end; perhaps this movie could have been saved by not being split into two parts. Maybe? |
| 2013 | Mood Indigo |
French arthouse explodes all over the screen for 1.5 hours; it gets tiring. Despite all this, the movie manages to get its act together somewhat and attempts to have a plot... eventually. |
| 1988 | Who Framed Roger Rabbit? |
A fun cartoons-meet-real-world romp! |
| 2003 | Anything Else |
A pleasing Woody comedy, with some enjoyable performances. |
| 2003 | Matchstick Men |
Not at all what I expected. Starts a bit slow. |
| 2014 | A Most Wanted Man |
A moody, nuanced, slow thriller. Hoffman shines, as usual. |
| 1996 | Everyone Says I Love You |
Woody does a musical. Fun! |
| 1997 | Contact |
Fun (in a 90s sorta way) and interesting. Well, for most of the movie, anyway - a few issues come across as forced (the religous issue), and some of the movies magic melts away towards the end. |
| 2014 | The Babadook |
It's so rare to find an actually frightening horror movie nowadays. This was a horrifying breath of fresh air. (I found the frights lessened towards the end, unfortunately) |
| 1984 | The Muppets Take Manhattan |
Despite feeling tired at several points, this movie manages to bounce back and throw Muppet fun at you sufficiently to stay on par with most of the other movies. A somewhat confusing ending, also. |
| 2014 | The Theory of Everything |
A fairly predictable, clichéd film, helped along by some generally good performances and an interesting enough plot. |
| 2014 | Birdman |
Spews originality, amazing cinematography, fun and interesting banter, gripping performances, and an incredible soundtrack to boot. Ticks all the boxes (and in under two hours)! |
| 1999 | Muppets From Space |
This Muppets entry has less musical than the others, but doesn't manage to soar any higher. Good, fun; a pleasant chuckle on a Sunday afternoon. |
| 2005 | Syriana |
A pretty full-on geopolitical thriller, likely necessitating a second watch. Well-made and very interesting. |
| 1996 | Muppet Treasure Island |
Most of these Muppet movies are pretty similar. There's really no reason to watch more than one of the classics... |
| 2014 | St. Vincent |
My favourite scene of the movie is the credits, as they feature Bill Murray lying on a chair doing just about nothing. Perhaps the movie should have had more of that, and less predictable, done-to-death heartwarming stories. |
| 1984 | This Is Spinal Tap |
Short and to the point - a hilarious movie, and one that seems important for your general knowledge. |
| 2011 | Source Code |
An interesting take at the Groundhog Day scenario. This movie is pretty interesting and compelling, but grows predictable and less exciting until it culminates in a terrible ending. |
| 2014 | Muppets Most Wanted |
Streamlined, full of action, events and singing; this is a higher-tier Muppets movie. |
| 1992 | A Few Good Men |
A Phoenix Wright case set during Seinfeld. Despite knowing the outcome of this film, I squirmed with joy at the excellent performances, and could barely stay on my seat during the final moments of the film. |
| 1981 | The Great Muppet Caper |
A bit of Muppets fun with some good cameos, but not much else. |
| 1979 | The Muppet Movie |
Charming and lovely, but it hasn't aged well. |
| 1987 | Good Morning, Vietnam |
Probably one of my favourite war movies. As Roger Ebert put it: 'A Vietnam-era "MASH"'. |
| 1986 | Labyrinth |
Surprisingly good. A relaxing, entertaining ride peppered with David Bowie. |
| 2009 | Daybreakers |
An interested (and flawed) premise follows a predictable route where our heroes eventually save the world, or something. |
| 2012 | Chronicle |
Some tiring teenage drama eventually culminates with fantastic DBZ style fight scenes, making the entire movie worth it. |
| 2005 | Capote |
Somewhat slow, yet riveting. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays the lead extraordinarily. |
| 1994 | Bullets over Broadway |
Probably one of Woody's more 'accessible' films - a hilarious, chirpy delight! |
| 2013 | Inside Llewyn Davis |
Sucks you in with mesmerising folk tunes and gorgeous cinematography, then manages to keep you awake with an engaging plot. Good! |
| 1999 | The Talented Mr Ripley |
An engaging, interesting movie with several unexpected plot directions. |
| 2012 | Museum Hours |
Modern Vienna and its art galleries: the slideshow. The film attempts to distract from its languid pace with a half-hearted sob story and a cocktail of important life issues. Or, so it wants you to think. An extremely pretentious and slow movie. |
| 1987 | The Princess Bride |
A self-aware damsel-in-distress tale, full of actually-good twists and jokes. Great! |
| 2012 | Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva la Fiesta! |
Oh god why is there a third one |
| 2007 | Magicians |
When watching a film like this, you try to think of redeemable qualities, anything to raise it above one star. Yeah. This film probably can't even find a home on daytime television, because of the swearing and sort-of nudity. |
| 1967 | The Graduate |
Here's to you, Mrs Robinson. Wonderful; even if only for the pop culture significance of this movie. |
| 2009 | World's Greatest Dad |
Gargh! Completely unexpected! Amazing! (Tapers off a bit towards the end though) |
| 2006 | The Queen |
Intelligent, interesting, and fresh. A real delight to watch! |
| 2006 | Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior |
You know what to expect with a movie like this. That said... I surprisingly enjoyed some of the Kung Fu scenes! |
| 2009 | Up in the Air |
A smart, well made movie that air travellers will appreciate. |
| 1972 | Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) |
A series of sketches forming a solid Woody Allen comedy. |
| 2008 | Synecdoche, New York |
Well. Okay. You'll need to have a long think about this one, and likely watch it twice. It's a great film. But there's a massive barrier to appreciating that, which makes it less than a great film. |
| 2012 | The Master |
Wonderfully made (as always with Paul Thomas Anderson), but runs at a plodding pace. I can appreciate that the 'depth' of this film may cause people to froth at the mouth, but I found myself uninterested. Maybe I need to rewatch it. |
| 2002 | Punch Drunk Love |
Adam Sandler without all the comedy: the movie. It's interesting, and well made, but sort of bland. |
| 1999 | Magnolia |
Paul Thomas Anderson, my hero. It happened, it really did! |
| 2006 | The Fountain |
A beautiful movie that seems a bit too short and jumpy for its grand scope. |
| 2014 | Frank |
A pretty weird movie! You're never sure what this movie will do next, it's plain interesting. |
| 2001 | Mulholland Drive |
Lynch movies provide a special kind of thrill that no other director can conjure. This movie sucks you in and toys with your head. |
| 1997 | The Game |
Probably David Fincher's weakest offering; but still a well crafted ride for the majority of its two hour run time. |
| 2014 | What We Do In The Shadows |
Despite running for less than an hour and a half, I felt this movie dragged on. I laughed at times, but found a lot of it dreary. |
| 1995 | Heat |
A solid crime movie, with some excellent acting. The plot could use some work though, there's no way this needed to go for almost three hours. |
| 1999 | Office Space |
Couldn't stop laughing: the movie. |
| 2002 | Panic Room |
David Fincher continues to demonstrate his mastery over your heartbeat. A damn solid film. |
| 2014 | Noah |
Two and a half hours of soppy speeches, terrible CGI, obvious conflicts, and Transformers (?!). What have you done, Aronofsky?! |
| 1998 | Pi |
Aronofski creates a thriller about mathematics. Absolutely fantastic! And very unsettling. |
| 2014 | Magic in the Moonlight |
A fun, charming film that likely holds heightened value to fans of Woody Allen. Fortunately, I am such a fan! |
| 1987 | Empire of the Sun |
All the Spielberg charm we know and expect, but perhaps with the strangest of settings. Excellently produced, a joy to behold; but the film doesn't really seem to go anywhere, or have much of a point. It feels incomplete. Also; 12 year old Christian Bale! |
| 2013 | Oz the Great and Powerful |
Wonderful visuals and effects, combined with a somewhat pedestrian (and at times dubious) plot. |
| 2014 | Transformers: Age of Extinction |
Until now, I had yet to experience an action movie where the action just fatigued me from sheer overwhelming volume. Clocking in at under 3 hours, this movie absolutely refuses to end. Oh, and it is Michael Bay, so I counted 20 unique uses of the American flag before I lost count and gave up. Honestly, I was counting. |
| 1967 | The Double Man |
The original Planet of the Apes director + Yul Brynner create a passable espionage film without many memorable moments. |
| 2014 | Edge of Tomorrow |
The sci-fi Groundhog Day 2, with Tom Cruise. Surprisingly good, actually! Excellent pace and action coupled with an interesting plot that doesn't get tiresome. |
| 1975 | Jaws |
Thrilling and intense. Spielberg, you are amazing. |
| 2010 | Machete |
Rodriguez strikes again. He clearly loves making these films; and he's pretty good at it, honestly. |
| 2008 | Starship Troopers 3: Marauder |
Doing its best to recapture the feel of the first movie, yet with a significantly reduced budget, this movie does a pretty darned good job. The characters are significantly weaker, though, producing some pretty terrible dialogue at times. |
| 2002 | 28 Days Later |
An enjoyable zombie romp. Unlike other zombie movies, it's not brimming to the teeth with zombies; rather, it focuses a bit more on the effects of the zombie outbreak. Not all of that is cinema gold though, mind you. |
| 1988 | Dirty Rotten Scoundrels |
I laughed quite a many times! Despite doing my best not to; I managed to work out the plot at some point - but this movie isn't really trying to win you on plot, isn't it. Funny! |
| 2014 | X-Men: Days of Future Past |
Far more enjoyable than Captain America; this movie felt more... well, real. Despite not being real. ..Regardless, it's similar to X-Men: The Last Stand in general themes, I find - and I quite enjoyed that movie too. |
| 1984 | Dune |
An incomprehensible plot filled with a vast compendium of characters that the film's mere 137 minutes can't possibly hope to contain or explain (177 minutes for the extended edition!). Just in case that conveyed the wrong impression; this film is also incredibly dull. Yikes. Don't do it. |
| 1995 | Screamers |
It seems like some love went into this movie. Unfortunately, it's not great. |
| 2013 | The Zero Theorem |
Brazil 2.0. Go Gilliam! I found myself absorbed in the fantastic style and atmosphere Gilliam crafts in this movie. "Zero must equal one hundred percent." |
| 2007 | Michael Clayton |
A fast-paced movie, with perhaps a little too much crammed into it for its own good. That said, it's a very satisfying watch. |
| 2014 | Captain America: The Winter Soldier |
Hollywood has perfected the perfectly average massive blockbuster. I had the feeling that a team of analysts and computers devised and scrutinised every word, action and scene in this movie, all to make something that everyone will pay to see over and over again. I've seen this movie before; haven't I. |
| 1965 | Repulsion |
Utterly engrossing and disturbing. Polanski, my word. |
| 2010 | The Ghost Writer |
Intelligent and thrilling. Thrilling. I love thrilling. SO MUCH. |
| 2014 | Bad Neighbours |
I laughed! I certainly wasn't expecting to laugh. Surprisingly good! |
| 2002 | Adaptation. |
Incredibly original! Great! |
| 2013 | Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues |
A solid sequel, but the original is better. This sequel, coming out almost 10 years after the original, mainly rehashes and 'extremifies' the original jokes, and it can do so quite well. |
| 2013 | The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug |
An improvement over the first, but not excessively so. This film manages to feel grander and more important; it moves away from its carefree beginnings into a more serious Lord of the Rings style. |
| 2005 | Everything is Illuminated |
The first half of this movie is a delight; wondrous Eastern European comedy. Unfortunately, the movie quickly hurdles around into something more sombre (WW2 + Jews). The transition between these two parts of the movie wasn't effective, and the second half is the weaker part of the movie. |
| 1985 | Brazil |
Well, alright then. 1984 + technology/tubeyness + satire. A good watch, gets rather confusing; and I'm not sure that's a good sort of confusing. However, definitely an entertaining movie! |
| 2013 | The Hunger Games: Catching Fire |
A marvellous improvement over the first - this time, the horrific issues central to the film are somewhat dealt with. Additionally, the action is improved, and the camera work is better. I like to see the first film as merely a set-up for this superior film. |
| 2012 | The Hunger Games |
Excellent production value, good casting, and almost well filmed. But for a movie where 12 year olds brutally murder each other, the action was awful and PG-13'd. Not to mention the plot was a bit predictable (and constantly missed opportunities to actually be insightful). All in all, this movie manages to be pleasantly average. Alright! |
| 1984 | Electric Dreams |
Beautifully filmed, attention-holding and honestly (at times) rather disturbing. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this movie comes together! |
| 1985 | Pulgasari |
The true joy of this movie lies in watching the Pulgasari costume clunkily move about the screen. Also, it's produced by Kim Jong-il. |
| 1994 | Brainscan |
It's like a worse version of Hackers! |
| 2014 | The Grand Budapest Hotel |
This movie represents the culmination of all of Wes's styles, and then with extras added. Wes+! |
| 2011 | Happy Feet Two |
The audio work is both charming and incredible; the camera and visuals yell at you with joy; and the story merely provides a a feeble excuse to tie it all together. I liked it! |
| 2012 | Seven Psychopaths |
Wow, I was not expecting this movie to be this good. Christopher Walken was fantastic! |
| 1984 | Gremlins |
Those lil' mogwai. They're like better furbies. Solid movie! |
| 1986 | Maximum Overdrive |
Killll meeee |
| 2007 | Timecrimes |
A well-made time travel movie. It has flaws, but it does a good job at distracting you from them, which I'm not sure is a good thing. |
| 1976 | Taxi Driver |
Thinking. |
| 2007 | The Darjeeling Limited |
Colours. So many colours. I sat back and relaxed as the film did whatever it was doing. That is the way to enjoy Wes films. Amazing! |
| 2001 | The Royal Tenenbaums |
You go, Wes. An exceptional cast plunge themselves into whacky Wes-ey situations. Woo! |
| 1986 | The Fly |
Surprisingly gripping. Cronenberg is a master of the fleshy-horror thing. |
| 1984 | The Terminator |
A classic. The movie that started it all. I have horrifying memories of watching this as a child, but that just makes it all so much better nowadays. |
| 1987 | The Running Man |
Schwarzenegger huffs about in a dystopian 80s future, slowly killing future wrestlers to an excellent soundtrack. |
| 1985 | The Stuff |
The Stuff. Surprisingly entertaining for a B movie. |
| 1993 | Demolition Man |
Fellow greetings, citizen. What seems to be your boggle? |
| 1988 | Dead Heat |
A cop cops about with his zombie sidekick, in the 80s. |
| 1980 | Airplane! |
The evolution of slapstick and, frankly, absurd comedy. Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker have an amazing style (the 'Leslie Nielson style'). Phenomenal! |
| 2013 | Man of Steel |
A disappointing storyline combined with disappointing melodrama. There's a lot of flashy CGI, but honestly, a lot of it just seems entirely pointless. The film is somewhat redeemed by some cool superpeople-fights near the end, but that's about it. |
| 2005 | Serenity |
Mmmmmmm, Firefly: The Movie. Admittedly, with more space battles and evil government conspiracies, but hey, I'm not complaining! |
| 1962 | Lolita |
Obsessive and shocking, with a main character that is difficult to feel sympathetic for. You go, Kubrick. |
| 2013 | World War Z |
The highest budget zombie film I can think of right now. It feels a bit like a Bond film in a way, going between so many different settings. All in all, it holds your attention for most of the 2 hours, and has some good zombie 'splosions. |
| 2013 | Iron Man 3 |
Mildly entertaining pew-pew, more pew-pew, and then silly amounts of pew-pew. |
| 2013 | Gravity |
Incredible-amazing. This film knows exactly what the word thriller means. Additionally, this is one of the greatest space movies I've seen. Not only that, but probably the best 3D movie I've seen. Wow.. |
| 2013 | Europa Report |
And I sat there, leaning forwards slightly, eyes fixated on the screen, absorbing the beautiful unfolding of science and buildup of tension before me. Spaacceeeeeee |
| 1989 | Crimes and Misdemeanors |
Woody Allen sets up a pretty morbid situation in this film, and then lets us watch as his characters thrash around helplessly inside of it. Of course, there's still a comedy running in parallel - how often does Woody only have one story going at a time? A good film! |
| 1996 | Bottle Rocket |
Wes Anderson's first film. It's certainly good (you can recognise his style), but I think he really shines as a director later in his career. |
| 2005 | Æon Flux |
Sort of...boring. Narp. |
| 2012 | Room 237 |
I love The Shining, but this movie is ridiculous. It's a collection of fan-theories on what The Shining was "really" about - like references to the number 42, implying 1942, implying Holocaust. Yeaahh. There's a terrible part where they play the film backwards, superimposed upon the film playing forwards, and make links. God. |
| 2004 | I Heart Huckabees |
A whacky philosophical comedy. Yeah, that's a thing. I'm not exactly sure what was happening a lot of the time, and I'm not sure if the film did either. But it's certainly worth watching! Let me leave you with a quote from film critic Roger Ebert: "This may be the first movie that can exist without an audience between the projector and the screen. It falls in its own forest, and hears itself." |
| 1975 | One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest |
Christopher Lloyd's (Doc Brown from Back to the Future) first film, and an early Jack Nicholson film. The film is solid, with some interesting themes (fight the establishment! yarr!), but it's a bit slow, and the pay-off feels somewhat unrewarding. |
| 1985 | Clue |
The movie has 3 endings. Each ending is a scene no longer than 5 minutes that can be tacked onto the 90 minutes of film that precedes it. The plot itself hence essentially doesn't matter at all, as the endings are all totally different. Still, I laughed at points, so the film has that! |
| 1989 | Robot Jox |
The storyline for this film was actually co-penned by a prominent science fiction author Joe Haldeman. I read the following quote from him, in which he talks about his clashes with the director. I think it sums up the film wonderfully! "I would try to change the science into something reasonable; Stuart would change it back to Saturday morning cartoon stuff. I tried to make believable, reasonable characters, and Stuart would insist on throwing in clichs and caricatures." |
| 1977 | House |
Japan at its finest. Meow meow meow |
| 1995 | Hackers |
A film splashing about with what was presumably the popular 90s take on the 'hacker' subculture. Still, getting past that whackiness, the film isn't amazing. |
| 1956 | Forbidden Planet |
Despite having flying saucers, somewhat wooden acting, and a wonderfully 50s vibe, this film is better than the majority of scifis released nowadays (I'm looking at you, Oblivion). The special effects were actually great, and the entire soundtrack (or 'electronic tonalities') was generated through wooshey bleepey circuits. The film produced some genuinely intense and fascinating moments. Great! Oh, and Leslie Nielson?! |
| 2013 | Blue Jasmine |
This is one of Woody Allen's 'darker' films, if that could really be a thing with Woody Allen. Cate Blanchett is pretttyy amazing too, I won't be forgetting the character she plays any time soon. |
| 1987 | Radio Days |
A warm ode to a time when the radio was basically what TV is today. All combined with a hilarious sort-of-disfunctional typical Woody Allen family. Great! |
| 1999 | Being John Malkovich |
Oh good god what did I just watch |
| 1985 | The Purple Rose of Cairo |
Woody Allen + 1930s cinema & the Great Depression. A film in which film characters literally come out of the screen. Yes, literally. Crazy Woody Allen... |
| 1975 | Love and Death |
Woody Allen insults Russia and philosophy for 85 minutes. God, are you incapable of making bad movies, Woody? Guess I haven't seen one of those yet. |
| 2009 | Castaway on the Moon |
South Korean cinema continues to delight! Think of this film as the Korean take on the rom-com. It's pretty stunning, I found it extremely engrossing. |
| 2004 | Night Watch |
I'm not really sure what happened in this film. Not that the plot seems that complicated, it was just presented.. strangely. A rather strange film overall. It's stylised nicely though - no crazy costuming for the 'light' and 'dark' guys, which is a bit unusual for this sort of film, and hence a nice touch. |
| 2012 | Mirror Mirror |
Boring and cringeworthy. This film tries to 'update' Snow White with all these modern elements (eg. let the damsel in distress save herself), which when combined with the omnipresent shallow attempts at comedy, caused me to dislike the film further. Julia Roberts and Lily Collins (Phil Collins daughter!) act pretty well, and the film is full of nice costumes and scenery (like a happy version of anything Tim Burton does), but really, that doesn't save this film. And oh god, the singing number at the end.. |
| 2007 | Katyń |
An elegant presentation of an absolutely horrific subject. |
| 2012 | Robot & Frank |
I thought I had this movie somewhat figured out - but then it goes and changes everything several times over its somewhat short 90 minute runtime. Well worth watching! |
| 1949 | The Third Man |
I watched this on a projector, over my wall. This movie was perfect for that - a wonderful atmospheric thriller. It reminded me of why I love cinema - that mystery, tension and excitement as a powerful and interesting story flickers to life in front of you. Magic! |
| 2013 | Pacific Rim |
So, I came into this movie expecting laughable garbage. What I found was a movie that barely took itself seriously, using whatever reasons it could to present you with more dramatic scenes of giant robots punching things. I found that I didn't even care about the absurdity of it all, it was just so.. well, fun! |
| 2013 | The World's End |
An enjoyable film about nothing, really. A bundle of misfits go around for no reason drinking at pubs, whilst punching blue-blooded robot things (also for no real reason). Good background entertainment! |
| 1981 | Chariots of Fire |
A visually and audibly majestic film. This film has a famous title score, and the rest of the soundtrack is fittingly amazing also. Definitely one of the better dramatic sport-related films out there! |
| 2013 | Oblivion |
So, I pretty much figured out the plot in the first 5 minutes, save for one twist. The movie is slow, and drags on for far longer than its rather weak plot can justify. Despite that, the movie delivers a lot of really pretty pew-pew CGI, which honestly is probably why you want to watch the movie in the first place. |
| 2013 | The Incredible Burt Wonderstone |
This movie does its best to be just like Anchorman, but Steve Carell is just strange acting like a Ron Burgandy. There are still some pretty hilarious moments in this though, especially the audience disappearing gag! Overall though, this is pretty skippable. |
| 2012 | To Rome With Love |
A somewhat clever movie that goes all over the place. I enjoyed the mashing of whatever Woody Allen was cooking up - the shower tenor was hilarious! |
| 2009 | 9 |
This movie has a nice charm. Sure, the plot isn't really groundbreaking, but I liked the feel and pace of the film, and enjoyed the overall theme. Good! |
| 2010 | Despicable Me |
The plot isn't anything special - which is fine: you don't really expect anything special coming into the movie. A light-hearted movie, with a lot of extra amusement from the masses of little yellow minions. |
| 1987 | Spaceballs |
Absolutely hilarious! Brilliant parodies of Star Wars, Star Trek, The Planet of the Apes, Battlestar Galactica, Indiana Jones... Oh man, amazing. |
| 1979 | Manhattan |
It's like Annie Hall 2.0. Just how many movies did Woody Allen do with Diane Keaton anyway? Regardless, a good fun Woody Allen movie. |
| 1986 | Blue Velvet |
I'm just not sure what to think about this movie. Was it good? Well, yes, I can see why it was good. Was it bad? I can see why you might think that. Did I like it? ...Yes, I think I did. |
| 2006 | Stranger Than Fiction |
A man lives a life somewhat determined by a narrator only he can hear - cool! There were some points (especially near the end) where I was just laughing at the absurdity of the situation - not that that's a bad thing! Though I felt the film a bit shallow for its great premise. |
| 1964 | Goldfinger |
Really, this film seems to be the one that defined many Bond movies after it. The last two focused more on spy drama - this one is all about gadgets, camp, and fantastic plots. Good fun! |
| 2013 | Side Effects |
This movie is not what it seems. And then again. All the twists reminded me of Hitchcock's style. Not only that, but the film is smart, with some fascinating issues discussed. Great! |
| 1995 | Waterworld |
Sorry, Waterworld, but I hated watching you. You're like Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the worst of that series. Boring, predictable, questionable. I can't remember enjoying any portion of this movie. |
| 2007 | Sunshine |
Visually beautiful, audibly magnificent. Even the science was fantastic (comparatively, of course)! The plot itself was interesting, but honestly, I was too busy soaking in the visuals, music and atmosphere. The plot allowed for those things marvellously! |
| 2013 | Upstream Color |
The cinematography, the music, the atmosphere.. wow. This movie is made by the mind behind Primer, and whilst the story is far more comprehensible than Primer's, there's not a single moment where you're not thinking and wondering about what's going on. Completely engrossing. |
| 1998 | Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels |
A hilarious play on a sort of Tarantino-esque gangster style. The movie builds up and up to an absolute explosion of hilarity at the climax. Great! |
| 1974 | The Great Gatsby |
Whilst dragging on for rather too long, and stuffed with excessive amounts of soapy romance, I actually found myself rather intrigued by the tale (having not read the book). I enjoyed Robert Redford's acting, and the warm lighting was great! |
| 1963 | From Russia with Love |
Intrigue, suspense and spies spying on spies spying on spies. Loved it! |
| 1962 | Dr. No |
I quite enjoyed the wonderful classic spying making up about half of the movie, but found the film tapered off a bit towards the supervillain lair and whatnot. Still, this is the film that started them all, and Sean Connery is amazing as always. |
| 2003 | Oldboy |
A marvel of Asian cinema, Oldboy is one of the most intense and raw movies you'll see. The lengths to which it goes to create certain situations is, well, disturbing. Exceptional! |
| 2011 | Manborg |
Manborg: a homage to 80s sci-fi produced with less than $2000. A rather short movie (1 hour) - I found myself enjoying all of it. What more do you want from a movie!? |
| 1981 | My Dinner With Andre |
Wow. Admittedly, this film has a rather slow start, but by the time the conversation moves into the crux of the tales, you realise you're hooked. Andre can feel rather pretentious and ridiculous at times, but he's certainly interesting. |
| 2007 | Babylon 5: The Lost Tales |
As this was created 5 years after the last movie, the CGI has improved incredibly (it was done by the same team that worked on Battlestar Galactica and Stargate). Amazing visuals! The stories themselves are interesting, but aren't phenomenal. |
| 2002 | Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers |
It's nice seeing the Babylon 5 CGI get better as the years pass. Regardless, this movie was petty and melodramatic. Despite almost falling asleep, I still found there were some cool scenes (space-bullet-punching!). |
| 1999 | Babylon 5: A Call to Arms |
This serves as the setup for the Babylon 5 spin-off TV show Crusade. The style was impressive - pretty different to regular B5 - and the plot was pretty darn good. Solid! |
| 1998 | Babylon 5: The River of Souls |
A weak setup that surprisingly results in some rather cool discussions and concepts. Not bad! |
| 1998 | Babylon 5: Thirdspace |
Large and explosive yet small and B5-like. Apparently the story is based on The Call of Cthulhu, but mmmmm. |
| 1998 | Babylon 5: In the Beginning |
This is actually an incredibly solid B5 movie, that explains the massive war that precedes the TV series, whilst managing to shoehorn in all the newer actors somehow. |
| 2000 | Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins |
Yeah Disney! This film is like a blend between Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 and Flash Gordon. At least, for the opening parts. |
| 2013 | Mama |
Horrid CGI, non-existant plot, predictable and boring shocks... bleh. Abysmal. |
| 2011 | Hotel Lux |
Well, that was a very unique way of looking at 1930s/40s Germany and Russia. Lots of hilarious moments! |
| 2013 | Star Trek Into Darkness |
The...the...the references... The throwbacks... So much canon... aaaaa |
| 2011 | We Have a Pope |
A man who doesn't want to be pope is elected pope. Funnily, the actual pope resigned not that long after this movie was made. A most entertaining movie! |
| 1997 | George of the Jungle |
NOOOSSTTTAALLGGGIIAAAAAAAAA..! This movie constitutes some of my earliest memories of cinema, and is henceforth amazing. Problems? What problems?! |
| 2002 | Russian Ark |
This film is one 87 minute continuous take - no cuts. The entire film is like a dream, honestly, I wasn't sure what was happening (or why) a lot of the time as I watched it. Though, I think I understand it more in retrospect. |
| 2012 | Argo |
After an incredibly tense introduction, this movie relieves all the macho 'Murrika-ism rapidly with an unusual Hollywood twist. The movie is thrilling - but I found that it became somewhat linear and without surprises after the fantastic introduction. |
| 2012 | Silver Linings Playbook |
Oh dear. A rom-com, a dancing subplot, even a coach thrown in; I was shocked when I found this movie to actually be great! |
| 2011 | Samsara |
Amazing! There's no narrative in this film - it's 'just' a series of clips with music. Wow. |
| 1993 | Manhattan Murder Mystery |
Woody Allen gold! I was surprised to see Diane Keaton in there, too. And that guy from M*A*S*H! |
| 2009 | Fantastic Mr. Fox |
Wes Anderson, do you make bad movies? If you have, I don't believe I've seen them yet. Bravo, bravo! |
| 2012 | Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome |
This movie was originally released as a series of 12-minute webisodes. Unfortunately, this makes the film a somewhat disconnected series of 10-minute action scenes, with forgettable characters and minor backstory. Apart from being in the same world as the amazing 2004 TV series, this movie doesn't share much else with it. |
| 2013 | The Last Stand |
Arnie! Yee-haw! Not terrible, but not phenomenal either! This movie was just plain entertaining. Lots of good action scenes, and of course, Arnie. |
| 2012 | Rise of the Guardians |
Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Chris Pine. I guess they like money. +1 for Russian Santa, but Chris Pine's voice just sounds entirely wrong coming out of that main character. Uhgg.. |
| 2012 | Wreck-it Ralph |
Crammed full of video game references and style, and just plain fun. This movie is great! It has a very Pixar feel style and feel to it, but you can also see the Disney in there. |
| 2011 | Contagion |
A captivating and rather horrifying medical thriller. I was reminded of the flash game Pandemic 2! |
| 2013 | Company of Heroes |
Not a good movie. But it has enough poorly done explosions and guns and nonsense to make you think it's somehow related to the game for most of the film. |
| 2001 | Moulin Rouge! |
Explosive and all over the place, combined with a dizzying level of pop music all medlied together. Baz Luhrmann is nuts. I loved it! |
| 1998 | Dark City |
This movie has great style, and a pretty unique and unexpected story; but at the same time moves a bit too fast, and is a bit shallow for all the brilliant themes it explores. |
| 1983 | Videodrome |
A surreal experience, which I felt similar to the likes of Eraserhead in some ways. Some really interesting ideas about technology and the boundaries between video and reality, as well! |
| 2009 | A Serious Man |
I think this is my favourite Coen brothers movie. Yes, I think it is. Hilarity, collar-tugging moments and Jefferson Airplane; in a whacky Jewish setting. Oh, and physics. |
| 2004 | The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou |
Great actors, loads of eccentricity - one of Wes Anderson's best! In fact, this'll be the craziest Wes Anderson film I've seen. I'll be watching this again! |
| 2007 | No Country for Old Men |
Similar to Fargo, but at the same time very different. There's a lot of exploration into the concept of 'evil' and the nature of violence, and some nihilism thrown in. Pretty thrilling, actually! |
| 2007 | Juno |
Though I felt that after the premise this sort of just ran around in circles for a while, it's an entertaining and fine movie. |
| 2007 | There Will Be Blood |
Capitalism, eh wot? This movie is a gripping epic that I can't help but compare to Citizen Kane. Sure, the protagonist doesn't have the same drive as Kane, but there's a lot of other similarities there. Additionally, Daniel Day-Lewis really knows how to act. Wow! |
| 2012 | Django Unchained |
Tarantino, you sure can tell a story. Not as strong as the Kill Bills or Pulp Fiction, but great nonetheless! |
| 2012 | John Dies at the End |
Uhh. Yeah, nah. |
| 2011 | The Story of Film: An Odyssey |
It's hard to give a score to a documentary, especially one that goes for 900 minutes. Yes, 900 minutes (it's commonly aired as a 15-part TV series). But I've never learned so much about film. Things like this should be compulsory viewing - somehow. |
| 1941 | Citizen Kane |
Actually? Yes, actually. This movie is superb. And I'm not just saying that whilst 'taking into account' that the film was released in 1941. It was fascinating, intelligent, and beautifully made. Great! |
| 1940 | The Great Dictator |
Wonderful and hilarious! I really enjoyed it - Chaplin certainly gets his message across. I won't be forgetting the ending of this movie anytime soon (the globe scene as well!). |
| 1950 | Sunset Blvd. |
Perhaps it's a bit ruthless to say this about a film so universally loved, but it is dated. It's still very well worth watching though, a fascinating and somewhat disturbing view of Hollywood. |
| 2010 | Black Swan |
I really love thrillers. Have I mentioned that? This one took me by complete surprise. It oozes with tension, and has a lot of really jolting moments. All of the contrast about the movie is incredible. |
| 2007 | The Man from Earth |
A phenomenal story. This is a film of people discussing matters, hardly ever leaving a single room - it gives the feeling of a book placed on the big screen. The actors aren't amazing, but they're solid - and this criticism washes away as the story just gets better and better. Fantastic! |
| 2004 | Napoleon Dynamite |
Quirky, funny, surprising, interesting - great! Quite a few memorable scenes! |
| 1978 | The Star Wars Holiday Special |
Wow. I don't have zero stars included on this scale, so this will have to do. ...Wow. |
| 2011 | Captain America: The First Avenger |
This is what happens at movie night. |
| 2012 | The Devil's Carnival |
Eehhh. Some good parts, and the rest bad. Not to mention that the popular song that hyped this was removed from the movie. |
| 2012 | Hitchcock |
I am a great fan of Hitchcock, and as such loved this movie. Every time he talked, I was captivated. He talks just like in the TV show and movie advertisements! |
| 1972 | Frenzy |
A very Hitchcock murder-thriller! I was on the edge of my seat! |
| 2007 | Across the Universe |
With characters with names like Jude, Lucy, Prudence, Jojo and the like, you can see where this movie is going! Unfortunately, the plot is mostly a series of excuses for more Beatles covers, which can be excusable, but the covers aren't always great (I cringed at the rendition of 'Revolution'). That said, there are still some pretty good performances in here, with some pretty cool imagery to go with! |
| 2007 | Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street |
A tightly orchestrated musical, combined with all that Tim Burton/Johnny Depp you know and love! |
| 1999 | Eyes Wide Shut |
Kubrick keeps winding up the tension slowly for this entire movie. I was restlessly shuffling around in my couch as it kept on going. Pretty intense! |
| 1999 | Sleepy Hollow |
The film is well made, and it has a great Burton style to it. Unfortunately, the story is predictable, and honestly, pretty bad. Bwah bwah.. |
| 2012 | The Dictator |
Borat and Bruno were waaayy better - Sacha Baron Cohen is more entertaining in that sort of more 'realistic' style, rather than a role where everyone around him is obviously an actor. Bananas (by Woody Allen) is better than this - though the film still has some good funny scenes. |
| 1999 | The Green Mile |
A very engrossing experience, but at the same time, somewhat predictable. The Shawshank Redemption, also by the same director, was better. |
| 1995 | Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls |
So, this was the first movie again, but slightly more children friendly. It has some good scenes though (the rhino scene!). |
| 1994 | Ace Ventura: Pet Detective |
Laughable! Laughably amusing! Film critic Roger Ebert said "Carrey plays Ace as if he's being clocked on an Energy-O-Meter, and paid by the calories expended.", which is very accurate, though he liked the movie a lot less than me. |
| 1999 | American Beauty |
I loved it. The movie is gripping. The musical score was also fantastic, and appropriate! |
| 1985 | Pee-wee's Big Adventure |
Good fun! This is the movie we can thank for giving the Blue Ball Machine its fantastic music. Unfortunately, whilst the movie starts of great, that tapers off as you progress through it. |
| 2011 | God Bless America |
This is worth watching. It's more a set of interesting monologues than a movie, though - the 'movie' elements were simply filled in by guns. Ah well. |
| 2005 | Sin City |
This movie oozes with atmosphere - helped in no small part by the film's colour style. Lacked depth, though. |
| 2011 | Batman: Year One |
The animation in this film is better than Under the Red Hood, if you ask me. It's an interesting story, but I don't think there's much to make this stand above the other various origin story movies - apart from large amount of comic-book, that is. (Batman is inspired to become Batman when a bat smashes through a window in his house, sits on his fathers statue, and squeaks loudly at him?) |
| 2010 | Batman: Under the Red Hood |
Admittedly, this movie gets pretty intense. It wrestles with, what I imagine is, the primary ethics of the Batman series. Cool! |
| 2012 | Frankenweenie |
I liked all the sciencey parts, and the science stigma the townsfolk had. Great! To be fair though, science was doing rather horrifying things. |
| 2011 | The Muppets |
This movie realises that the Muppets haven't been around for a while, and creates a charming story out of it in the typical fourth-wall-breaking Muppets style. Coooool! |
| 2012 | Dark Shadows |
A pretty standard Tim Burtoney film, except it seems to lack a lot of the interest and drive that his other films have. - He's done better! |
| 2012 | The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey |
I had no idea that this movie was going to be part of a trilogy. That was a bit of a let down, I expected the film to end (after all, The Hobbit is one not-that-long book). The film was a collection of rather amusing moments, really. It seemed to lack...purpose. |
| 2012 | Les Misérables |
I want to watch it again. I rarely want to do that with films. |
| 2012 | Cloud Atlas |
A genuinely and constantly interesting film. Yes, it can get rather.. messy, but I'll certainly be talking about this for years to come. Extremely memorable and fascinating - this film never bores you (despite being nearly 3 hours long). I don't think I've seen a movie of larger scope. |
| 1992 | The Muppet Christmas Carol |
Of all the countless Christmas movies, I think this is my favourite. Man, those muppets.. |
| 1966 | Batman |
I warn you, you should probably watch this in a group. This movie has more camp than I think I've ever seen crammed into a movie. Hiillarrious! |
| 2012 | The Amazing Spider-Man |
I enjoyed this more than the 2002 Spider-Man. The cast was far more likable, and Spider-Man performed much more interesting spider-things. It was good fun! |
| 1996 | From Dusk till Dawn |
This is two films in one, and they're both rather... mediocre. It's nice seeing Tarantino having a main role though - that surprised me! He actually did a pretty good job, as well! |
| 1960 | Psycho |
Re-watching this, you really admire how Hitchcock keeps you unaware of twists before they happen. One of my favourite movies! |
| 2009 | Drag Me to Hell |
Despite the plot being retarded and all the shocks being cheap, sudden frights (Boo!), I actually sorta enjoyed this. I most certainly jumped at most of the shocks, even though they're obviously coming. Great! |
| 2011 | Drive |
Well, there's certainly a noir feel to this film, and it has some great scenes (the opening, for example). There's also rather graphic levels of violence (stomping on somebody's repeatedly head until it's just a mess of goop). Altogether though, it could have been better. |
| 2006 | Crank |
In this film, if the heart rate of the protagonist drops to 'normal' rates, he dies. So, he's constantly running around killing things. Interesting, I guess, but there's not that much else to it. |
| 1977 | Eraserhead |
Certainly worth a watch! This film oozes atmosphere, which is probably all you can say about it. The story is... wait, there's a story? |
| 2006 | The Wicker Man |
Deceptive! This movie disguises itself as a well-made, interesting modern film initially, but you slowly start to realise otherwise as it progresses. My, my, my! |
| 2012 | The Dark Knight Rises |
Grand! This Batman movie pretty much builds to a war in Gotham, and alludes to the outside-Gotham world (US Army, president, etc). It runs around in circles for a bit before that, though - that is, after seeing the second half, you don't remember much about the first half. Also; Bane has an amazing voice! |
| 2008 | The Dark Knight |
Great! I'm sure most people know the now-famous "Why so serious" line from this movie - the Joker was superb! I'm hesitant to talk down the mighty Jack Nicholson, but Heath Ledger's Joker was just better. The Batman universe seems to be teeming with (literal) insanity, and this movie showed the psychosis of the supervillains magnificently. |
| 2005 | Batman Begins |
A wonderful Batman origin story. It was completely gripping for the most part, but the whole Gotham-destruction parts near the end simply weren't as interesting or as good as the rest of the movie. |
| 1997 | Batman & Robin |
I think Batman Forever was better than this. The amount of camp in this film is... high. In defence(?) of the film, every second phrase Arnold Schwarzenegger utters is an icy pun. Or perhaps it's more frequent. I'm not sure. |
| 1995 | Batman Forever |
I'm not sure what happened here. No, I lie, I know: Tim Burton didn't direct it. Apparently, Tim was ousted due to parental pressure, and the new director opted to make this toyetic film. Jim Carrey couldn't save this film - the plot was minimal and was somehow expanded into two hours. Ah well. |
| 1992 | Batman Returns |
Much better! The villains were all fantastic, as was Batman. This felt like a true Tim Burton film. |
| 1989 | Batman |
Jack Nicholson was waay better then just about everyone else. That's odd - shouldn't Batman be the most important character? Also, I'm not exactly a Batman fan by any scale, but I've picked up a few things about the character & universe over the years (thanks in no part to a specific Batman loving someone) - and it seems to me that a lot of things that would never happen happened in this movie. All together, it's still a very Tim Burton movie - but he's done better. |
| 1987 | Full Metal Jacket |
After a hilarious, disturbing and brilliant opening segment, I find the movie seems to loose purpose. Perhaps that in itself is part of the purpose of the film. Perhaps. In a way, this is an example of your 'standard' Vietnam War film, if you know what I mean by that. |
| 1973 | Battle for the Planet of the Apes |
Abysmal. This movie shouldn't even exist. Battle of the Planet of the Apes? Battle?! Really?! There were a few crazy people riding a school bus in a park, moving it slowly towards some apes living in tree houses. That was the grand battle of the mighty Planet of the Apes. Woo-hoo. |
| 1972 | Conquest of the Planet of the Apes |
Mnhm. Okay. So. This film doesn't make much sense, logically. Also, it was delivered very poorly. There were some cool scenes, actually. Except they lasted seconds each, and were drowned in sub-mediocrity. |
| 1971 | Escape from the Planet of the Apes |
I'd like to compare this to Star Trek IV. The one where Kirk and friends go to modern day earth for crazy antics. Except, the crazy antics only last for about half this film, then it seems to loose inspiration. |
| 1970 | Beneath the Planet of the Apes |
This movie sort of reminds me of Fallout. There's bomb worshipping and everything. A strange movie, overall. |
| 2000 | O Brother, Where Art Thou? |
I laughed! At several occasions! Oh hoh hoh! I mean, this isn't the Coen brothers' best movie, but it certainly has its moments. Good music, too! |
| 1968 | Planet of the Apes |
This movie sort of reminds me of a long episode of Star Trek. The main character is even a sort of Kirk-wannabe. Regardless, it's a good movie! It suffers from being rather slow at times, though. |
| 1994 | The Shawshank Redemption |
Touching! If you've ever wondered why 'life' prison sentences only actually last ~20-30 years (they do, usually)... Well, watch this. Now that I think about it, I think I saw this movie parodied in the Simpsons once. They sure do include a lot of movie references in that show. |
| 1968 | Rosemary's Baby |
It's a horror film that doesn't even feel like a horror film. Good job, Roman Polanski! |
| 1998 | Rushmore |
I need to see more Wes Anderson films. I liked Moonrise Kingdom a bit more, but this was still wonderfully quirky and amusing. |
| 2012 | Skyfall |
I thought that Casino Royale was the greatest 'new' Bond movie. No, no, no. This blows Casino Royale out of the water. There is so much about this movie that I simply won't forget, for years to come. Wow. |
| 1971 | A Clockwork Orange |
Completely disturbing, and completely fascinating. Merciless and dystopian, rather explicit, but captivating and intense. I loved it. |
| 2010 | Shutter Island |
Thrillers! Oh man, I love thrillers! Psychological thrillers, even better! |
| 1999 | Fight Club |
I can't. Think. What. See. Herg. |
| 2004 | Team America: World Police |
I seem to love it more every time I see it. That's interesting. |
| 2011 | Hugo |
A charming tale that doubles as a homage to the early days of cinema (and pioneering filmmaker Georges Mlis). Great! |
| 2001 | Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within |
Watching this movie is like watching a mediocre video game plot. Complete with objectives like: Collect eight spirits! Get three fuel cells for the ship! Disengage the docking clamps for the ship! Annndd so forth. I think there was a part at the end where the main character yelled "Don't leave me!" to the secondary character, as he was dangling over the edge of a cliff. Good times! |
| 2004 | Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind |
Wow. Jim Carrey constantly surprises me with these movies where he doesn't just comedy all over the place. I had no idea what to expect from this movie, and it surprised me all the way through. Coool! |
| 1992 | Glengarry Glen Ross |
I was bored. No, really. The acting was fantastic, the mood was great - but I was bored watching this. Ah well. |
| 1959 | Plan 9 from Outer Space |
Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Are there better movies out there with wobbly UFO's suspended on string? I DOUBT IT. |
| 1982 | Blade Runner |
I read the book this is based on (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) last year, so I feel slightly biased against this film. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is one of my favourite books - and the movie follows much the same ideas, but it's rather different at the same time - I spent most of the movie going "Awh, that's not the same...". However, this film has neo-noir pinned down - the imagery is AMAZING, and the characters are superb. My gripes are minor, and they certainly don't make the film any less enjoyable - fantastic! |
| 2003 | Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World |
Oh my god. I'd say more, but I think that about sums it up. |
| 1992 | Reservoir Dogs |
Tarantino never ceases to amaze me. I love his theatre-like style of movies - this movie was set almost exclusively inside a single warehouse, where a fascinating story unfolded. Brilliant, intense, and gripping. |
| 2012 | Looper |
I came into this movie expecting Bruce Willis to solve time travel problems by shooting some swirling time void until it explodes, with an American flag rolling down in the background shortly after. I came out of this movie rather surprised - it was good. Time travel was handled interestingly, albeit extraordinarily paradoxically. A lot of interesting issues are shown through the setting, but never talked about, which was a rather smart way to evolve this as an action film. I suppose I just really wanted something more then an action film from this movie, given the cool premise. |
| 1996 | Fargo |
A thinking person's movie. There are a few moments of extreme tension and brilliance that I adored, coupled with the film's amazing soundtrack. |
| 1979 | Alien |
Absolutely dripping with atmosphere. I rewatched this on a massive projector screen in a darkened lecture theatre. It was even better then the first time I saw it. |
| 1995 | Twelve Monkeys |
Some pretty cool time travel themes, mixed with questions about sanity and perceptions of reality. Following that, a splash of doomsday virus is added in. I've heard this movie described as confusing (I laughed, those people must not have seen Primer), but really, I found that it went for a bit too long, and seemed to lack... focus. Ooo, vague.. |
| 2001 | Donnie Darko |
Rewatching this, I think I more fully understand it. And wow, I loved it even more. Yes, yes, and yes! |
| 2006 | A Scanner Darkly |
I loved it. This movie draws you in entirely, and progressively and subtly changes in presentation and theme, leaving you just as confused as the main character becomes. Who, by the way, is Keanu Reeves - and I honestly don't think I've seen him more expressive in any other film. There's some sort of 'interpolated rotoscope' effect overlaid over the whole movie as well - google some images. |
| 1990 | Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe |
I am confused as to why I watched this. Ah well. At least it was better then that other movie. I think. Gawd, I don't even remember. |
| 1974 | T.N.T. Jackson |
I don't even think I really watched this. You probably shouldn't either. There was kung fu? Yeah, probably. |
| 1991 | K-9000 |
I was entirely deceived. The front cover showed a robot super dog. The actual movie just has a normal dog that mind-talks to someone. And it's BARELY FEATURED. Beh. |
| 1992 | Hard Boiled |
I don't think I've seen more explosions in a film. John Woo is a poet. A gun and explosion poet. This movie contains many of the single greatest action scenes I've seen in cinema. There's one ~3 minute continuous scene filmed from a single camera, that's, well... Watch the movie, yes? |
| 2011 | Midnight in Paris |
It's directed and written by Woody Allen. But he's not actually in it. Instead, Owen Wilsen acts almost exactly like Woody Allen. Which is great! However, it's hard to get around the fact that it's *still* just a rom-com, despite some rather cool recursive nostalgia ideas. |
| 2012 | Moonrise Kingdom |
Bright, primary colours - deliberately awkward acting - friendly and cheerful yet deep. I LOVED this film. |
| 2012 | Prometheus |
I liked it. I enjoy soaking up backstory, and that's exactly what this movie is about - backstory to the Alien universe. There were also some gripping Alien-esque moments, and some excellent characters. |
| 1958 | Vertigo |
I feel I should have liked this more. Admittedly, this movie completely surprised me. And, to be fair, it's not really cliche... Vertigo was probably the first, or one of the first, movies to do some things it did. Though, I've *seen* many of its plot points before, in many other movies/tv, that I've watched before watching Vertigo. I think I'll stop talking, before that argument gets anymore circular. |
| 2001 | The Man Who Wasn't There |
Neo-neo-noir + Beethoven. This film starts slowly, and gradually and subtly builds and builds till the atmosphere is thick with fantastic. |
| 2012 | Total Recall |
All of my eh. There's guns, and shooting and stuff. And some generic future-world setting. That's about all I remember - I can't even really remember the characters. Arnie's version is fantastic - this: eh. |
| 2011 | Melancholia |
My mind shudders in agony at the many potential English essays that can come out of this film. Apart from that, it's a rather surreal experience, that seems just a bit too drawn out. |
| 1983 | Zelig |
A Woody Allen film about a man who turns into the stereotype of whoever he's talking to. Hilarious, but it went on for a bit long. |
| 1974 | Chinatown |
Roman Polanski + Jack Nicholson + Film Noir + Fascinating Plot + Cool Ending = Scrumptious |
| 1989 | Oedipus Wrecks |
A typically crazy Woody Allen movie (actually part of an anthology film - New York Stories). It's the Woody Allen treatment of the 'embarrassing mother' story. Blows 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot' out of the water... not that that's hard. |
| 1978 | Gates of Heaven |
I found this, well, boring, and stupid. Sure, you can read into the movie, or you can just realise it's about silly old American people believing their dogs have a special place in heaven. Errol Morris has better films (like Tabloid!). |
| 2012 | Iron Sky |
Space and Nazis combine to give you exactly what you expect and more. A good, fun movie. |
| 2010 | Tabloid |
A hilarious documentary, involving kidnapping, manacled Mormons, single-minded devotion to love (bordering stalking) and cloning. Yep. |
| 2006 | V For Vendetta |
Despite the film being about a terrorist inside a utopian society, it's absolutely fantastic. |
| 2000 | Memento |
The entire storyline is told backwards. And I loved that. |
| 1977 | Annie Hall |
A rewatchable classic from Woody - likely among his best work, along with being among the best rom-coms out there. |
| 2011 | Carnage |
A Roman Polanski film about four people inside an apartment room. That's it. Yup. |
| 1971 | Bananas |
Woody Allen becomes the dictator/El Presidente of some central American country. Hah! |
| 1973 | Sleeper |
It's not often modern audiences get to watch 1.5 hours of slapstick. And Woody certainly knows what he's doing. |
| 1992 | Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot |
Possibly the worst film I've ever seen. Please avoid. Please. |
| 1991 | Samurai Cop |
This film is...bad. Watch it. |
| 2007 | Battlestar Galactica: Razor |
This clashes new BSG with old BSG. Wow... |
| 2009 | Battlestar Galactica: The Plan |
The entire 1st/2nd season told from the Cylons perspective. Yeah, don't watch it unless you've seen ALL of BSG. |
| 2009 | Star Trek |
Star Trek for people who have never seen Star Trek before. PEW PEW PEW |
| 2002 | Star Trek: Nemesis |
The Enterprise rams a ship. Also, there's some interesting but ultimately unimportant Romulan politics. Apart from that, hasn't this been done before? |
| 1998 | Star Trek: Insurrection |
This contains a slightly lame alien feud, which then gets combined with Federation meddling, creating interesting ethical dilemmas. |
| 1996 | Star Trek: First Contact |
The Star Trek movie that plays on television yearly; featuring fights, explosions, and evil cyborg aliens. Borg borg borg! |
| 1994 | Star Trek: Generations |
This blends between Kirk and Picard, which is pretty cool. Plot is a bit eh though. |
| 1991 | Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country |
Action, mystery, and suspense combined with some hefty significance within the Star Trek universe. |
| 1989 | Star Trek V: The Final Frontier |
Boring, unusual, and illogical. A disappointment. |
| 1986 | Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home |
A solid, quirky and fun time-travel movie. Much less serious than the other Star Trek installments. |
| 1984 | Star Trek III: The Search for Spock |
Given that this follows The Wrath of Khan, it really creates bit of a glum feeling of disappointment. |
| 1982 | Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan |
After ditching Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek filmmakers were able to create the single greatest of the Star Trek films. Absolutely top notch. |
| 1979 | Star Trek: The Motion Picture |
One hour of awesome 2001-Space-Odyssey style stuff, then one hour of tiresome typical oolld Star Trek plot. |
| 1988 | They Live |
Subliminal messages?! (Possibly) the best fight scene I've ever seen?! Yes! |
